ABSTRACT

Abstract The Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, published since 1925, is the most influential dermatological journal in Latin America, indexed in the main international bibliographic databases, and occupies the 50th position among the 70 dermatological journals indexed in the Journal of Citations Reports, in 2022. In this article, the authors present a critical analysis of its trajectory in the last decade and compare its main bibliometric indices with Brazilian medical and international dermatological journals. The journal showed consistent growth in different bibliometric indices, which indicates a successful editorial policy and greater visibility in the international scientific community, attracting foreign authors. The increases in citations received (4.1 ×) and in the Article Influence Score (2.9×) were more prominent than those of the main Brazilian medical and international dermatological journals. The success of Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia in the international scientific scenario depends on an assertive editorial policy, on promptly publication of high-quality articles, and on institutional stimulus to encourage clinical research in dermatology.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In the academic world, scientific publication has become a constant problem, both in its quantitative and qualitative elements. ABSTRACT

The Peruvian Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (RPGO, for its acronym in Spanish) has obtained its inclusion in the important Scopus database. A quick review of the journal's publication recalls the editorial dedication of its six editors, four of whom had just recently chaired the Peruvian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SPOG, for its acronym in Spanish). The initial editorial work was carried out manually, on typewriters and continuously visiting the printing press, as well as the sponsors. The commitment of the SPOG Steering Committees to finance the publication and distribution of the issues allowed the gradual indexing to local, regional and international databases. Its internalization was expanded since the publication of the RPGO in the Open Journal Systems (OJS), a computer system where articles are published with punctuality, quality, including their editorial characteristics and the Information for Authors. Now the publication is only virtual, in English and Spanish, with visibility and impact of the articles since the beginning of the RPGO in 1955. With updated OJS data on the RPGO, the number of monthly visits to the abstracts reaches up to 10 thousand and monthly downloads of articles in PDF format reach more than 9 thousand. And, in the field of obstetrics and gynecology scientific journals in Latin America and Spain in Scopus, the h index of the RPGO by Google Scholar Metrics stands out as one of the best. At present, and facing future challenges, the activity of the RPGO has been strengthened, establishing an editorial team and tools that allow the already initiated professionalization of the processes of the editorial activity.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Instruments in Spanish with known psychometric properties are required to measure the attitudes of medical students towards scientific activities. Objectives. To determine the psychometric properties of three instruments to measure attitudes towards scientific research, perceptions about barriers to research and attitudes towards scientific reading. Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed in 311 medical students from an university in Peru. The instruments used the Likert scale of six responses. A confirmatory analysis was performed by modeling structural structures. Results. The instrument on attitudes towards scientific research resulted in three factors, the first (9 items, coefficient α = 0.888), the second (8 items, α = 0.847) and the third (3 items, α = 0.653). Perceptions of barriers to research are evaluated with two factors, one with 6 items (α = 0.779) and the other with 4 items (α = 0.771). The instrument that measure attitudes towards scientific literature has two factors: the first measures expectancy values (8 items, α = 0.848) and the second measures self-perceived competences in scientific reading (4 items, α = 0.838). Conclusions. Three differentiated instruments applicable to medical students are presented. These have an established factorial structure and adequate internal reliability for the measurement of attitudes towards scientific research, barriers to research and towards the scientific literature.

ABSTRACT

Every day, nurses face dilemmas in clinical practice by having to make decisions about caring for patients, which can occur without up-to-date knowledge or sufficient resources. In previous reflections, I have exposed and commented on the need to move from research, particularly from research findings, to the practice in the different contexts of nursing work and of health sciences in general, exposing the gap that still remains between the generation of knowledge and its application in daily practice.(1,2) This gap, although in differential magnitude, is still present in the different scenarios in which nursing takes place, that is, in healthcare practice (hospital, outpatient, and community), as well as in teaching.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Much of the research works developed by students and presented in scientific events are not published in scientific journals. Objective: To characterize the research works presented in the 2016 and 2018 editions of the Evento Científico Estudiantil Nacional de Medicina Interna (National Student Scientific Event on Internal Medicine - (MEDINTÁVILA) and those published in scientific journals, as well as to identify factors associated with their publication. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional analytical study. A search strategy was carried out in April 2020 in Google Scholar in order to verify if the works presented in the 2016 y 2018 editions of the event had been published, in English or Spanish, in scientific journals. Bivariate analyses were performed to determine whether there were characteristics of the works associated with their publication, calculating prevalence ratios, along with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals and p-values and using generalized linear models (family=Poisson; link=log) in which each university submitting the research work was used as a cluster. A significance level of p<0.05 was considered. Results: Out of the 335 research works analyzed, 180 (53.73%) were presented at the 2016 edition. Regarding typology and the topics they addressed, 190 (56.72%) were classified under the free topics category, and 170 addressed chronic illnesses (50.75%). A total of 24 works were published (7.16%), of which only 9 were cited, and there were authoring changes in 19 (79.17%). No factors associated with the publication of the works were identified in the bivariate analysis. Conclusion: The publication in scientific journals of the research works presented in both editions of the event is very low, thus it is necessary for Cuban universities to provide medical science students with more research-related support, since this could increase the probability of publishing their works.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Journal clubs are a strategy that allows students to be exposed to critical appraisal of articles from the early stages of their training. Its long term impact on the formation of competencies is debated. Objetive: To evaluate if the sessions of a Journal Club increase the confidence that Dentistry students have in their abilities to critically appraise a clinical trial. Material and Methods: A prospective cohort study that involved 21 students from the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Lima, Peru) who participated in six Journal Club monthly sessions. The sessions involved the analysis and discussion of clinical trials. Confidence to critically appraise an article before and after was assessed using a self-administered scale. Final and baseline scores were analyzed using a Wilcoxon test. Results: Nineteen students finished all the sessions. Scores before the sessions were on average 2.09±1.17, while after the sixth session an average of 3.53±0.26 was obtained (p<0.05). Both males and females had improved scores after the sessions; however, there were no differences between them (p=0.08). The third- and fourth-year students presented significant changes in their scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: The constant participation in the sessions of a Journal Club improved the confidence that students have when critically evaluating a clinical trial article.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Predatory journals are a global threat, because they accept manuscripts for publication for fees, without performing the promised quality controls. Naïve readers are not the only victims, novice researchers have also been tricked into submitting their manuscripts to these journals. Objective: The objective was to identify the characteristics of a predatory magazine. Materials and methods: A systematic review has been carried out following the PRISMA Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyse guidelines of the empirical studies found in PubMed, SciELO, Elsevier and academic Google with the MeSH terms ("predatory journals" or "predatory journal and systematic review"). Results: 81 writings with the indicated terms were located, selecting six possible articles, in which only four writings were accessed. Conclusions: There is no single and infallible checklist, but it is pointed out that predatory journals: lack records in DOAJ, ICMJE, COPE, likewise it is necessary to verify if the editor is a member of known publishing organizations, if the website of journals contains current and reliable information, if indexed in PubMed; for this, see MEDLINE.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background The quantity and quality of Brazilian scientific output increases decade by decade. However, there is a tendency to undervalue Brazilian journals, illustrated by the low number of citations compared with texts in international journals, with the tacit justification that foreign articles are of superior quality. Objectives To investigate the differences in numbers of citations of Brazilian and international periodicals in three Brazilian journals from 2016 to 2020. Methods All articles published in the Journal of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, in the Jornal Vascular Brasileiro, and in Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed. The references of these studies were analyzed, summing the total number of citations and classifying them as published in Brazilian or foreign journals. Results A total of 902 articles were analyzed, totaling 23,394 references, with a mean of 25.81 ± 8.59 references per article. Of these, 2,680 (11.45%) were Brazilian, equating to a mean of 2.95 ± 3.79 Brazilian references per article. Conclusions It is necessary to improve appreciation of Brazilian periodicals, especially among Brazilian researchers and institutions responsible for science funding.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND The Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (MIOC) is one of the first scientific journals created in Brazil and currently one of the most important biomedical journals in South America. Knowledge of the main themes disseminated over time and its main contributors can contribute towards a better understanding of its trajectory and future. OBJECTIVES Map the journal's scientific publication between 1909 and 2020. METHODS Data from three scientific databases was combined, alongside bibliometrics and network analysis to analyse publication records between 1909 and 2020. FINDINGS Publications increased substantially since the 1980s. The main publishing organisations are Brazilian. Excluding Brazil, the main publishing countries are the USA, Argentina, and Colombia. During the entire investigated period, the main themes refer to Chagas disease, schistosomiasis, and Leishmaniasis. During some periods, publications followed disease outbreaks in Brazil (e.g., dengue fever and yellow fever). MAIN CONCLUSIONS Since its foundation in 1909, the MIOC has focused on infectious and parasitic diseases. The editorial changes implemented from the 1980s onwards led MIOC to a relevant growth concerning annual publications and its transformation into an important communication vehicle for researchers from several Brazilian organisations besides Fiocruz, as well as organisations from other countries, especially within Latin America.
